Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Unfortunately, she didn't get the chance to go back to the sea.

Lolita's captors, also known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored veterinary recommendations and continued to put her at risk. They harm her health by requiring her to perform for tourists, overexerting her with head-first dives that expose her to chlorine, which causes her to lose weight and harming her immune system. They also place her in a tank one-and-a half times smaller than her natural habitat.

In 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita an aunt of theirs, vowed to work on a plan with a group of Lolita supporters known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe to transport her to open water eventually. The plan would have included a facility on Washington's west coast where she could stay for the duration of her life, receive medical attention and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen will be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home, and would be surrounded by the ocean itself, not an actual concrete tank.

If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could be alive. In the wild, killer whales are social animals that bond with their family members until they die. Lolita has lived isolated at Seaquarium for 40 years. People from all over the country have called for Lolita's departure from Seaquarium and eventual release in the wild. Lolita's Diet
