How to Replace an audi a1 car key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located at the top of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can start spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw the P00160 error, Audi spare Keys which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync, possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. The code won't show without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It's a bit tricky to test since there are several pins on the connector and each one has different functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is functional, it should read around 1000 ohms. Check for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll i had an abrupt drop in power as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors aren't firing any more. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole, and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the 3 that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one stays closed. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got zero ohm. I think the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car can start if the G28 is disconnected and is running fine when it is plugged in however it has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when it is unplugged, shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is zero.

I don't know what to do. I believe that I've eliminated everything else. But i am afraid I may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 and they both work in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or in a local parts store. Testing them is easy by putting your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's side). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines requires to know the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, etc. In order to do this it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these goes badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner which can lead to engine shutdown.

It is likely that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you encounter any of these symptoms. 5. Tachometer

A damaged engine sensor could cause a myriad of issues in your car. It's an essential component of the audi tt key programming's transmission as it sends information to the ECU about how fast or slow the car's crankshaft is turning. When this sensor fails, it could cause problems for the transmission and the other car's components.

The G5 engine sensor is located near the edge of the transmission, over the flywheel ring. It transmits signals via gray wire to ECU pin T55/49. The ECU uses this signal to control fuel and boost, as well as timig. It also sends it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can determine if the sensor is in failure by examining the continuity of the sensor to the tachometer. You can also examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. You should detect an average resistance of 1000 ohms between these points. This is a standard component across the programming audi key 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC through the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU, so the best ones might be availble in wrecking yards.
