Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita’s Personality

It is important to have clear boundaries set to ensure that the macaw does feel threatened.

Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds who love to play, interact and climb. They require at least 2 to 3 hours per day out of their cages for physical exercise and mental stimulation. They love playing games while listening to music, and learning new tricks. They also love going to parks and playgrounds as well as hiking and going to local bars and restaurants. Apart from being a fun pet, they are also great pets for children.

They can be extremely loud, despite their love for them. They can also be a nuisance for people living near. They are capable of ear-shattering calls and screech-calls, which can be disruptive in condos and apartments or near children who might be startled by their roar.

This species is also monomorphic. Females and males can be difficult to distinguish. Because of this the only way to reliably identify sex is through DNA testing. Once the bird's sex is known, breeding can begin.

Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to learn commands, phrases and tricks. Lolita's Care

For decades, activists have been pleading for the release of Lolita from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 movie Free Willy sparked public outrage over the reintegration of orca Keiko into the wild, conservationists hoped that Lolita would suffer a similar fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get a chance to return to the ocean.

The captors of Lolita - the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They cause harm to her health by requiring her to perform for tourists. They over-exert her with high-speed circles and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. They also put her in a tank one-and-a-half times smaller her natural habitat.

Fortunately, in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who view her as to be a family member and plan to eventually move her to open waters. The plan included a sanctuary pen in Washington's westcoast where she could live the remainder of her life, receive human care, and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami house and is surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.

If the plan had been implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive today. In the wild, killer whales are social animals who are close to their families until they die. Lolita who has been in a solitary space at Seaquarium in a secluded area for over 40 years, is being released into the wild. Activists from across the country have demanded Lolita's retirement from Seaquarium and eventual release in the wild. These activists include Ric O'Barry, a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet
