How to Replace Window Panes

A cracked window pane is a nuisance. This can be an opportunity to upgrade to energy-efficient windows or insulated ones to enjoy benefits such as improved comfort, increased resale values and reduced utility bills.

It's a project you can tackle yourself at a fraction of the cost of hiring a professional. It requires the right tools and an hour or two of your time.

Glass

Replace your old single-paned windows with tempered or insulate glass to improve energy efficiency, cut down on noise, and preserve the historical integrity of your home's older. Most homeowners with basic hand tools can repair windows with ease. In addition to a new pane, the following items are needed such as latex glazing putty; Glazier's points; pliers and a heat gun for warming the old putty, if necessary. Wear safety goggles and gloves prior to starting. Working with broken glass could result in serious injuries.

Begin by removing any broken pieces of glass. This is best accomplished with a pair of pliers, however, flathead screwdrivers can work in a pinch. Then, use a wooden chisel, or putty knife, to remove the rest of the old putty from the frame and sash. Work slowly and carefully and be careful not to break the existing window sash. This should be done on a ladder, not the ground. Also, you should have someone on the ground to ensure it is held steady.

Once you've removed all the old putty, it is time to prepare the window frame for the new pane. Take measurements of the width and height of the opening in the sash, subtracting 1/8 inch from each measurement (to allow for seasonal expansion and contraction). Bring these measurements to an hardware store or home center, and have a piece of stock glass cut to size. You can also cut the glass yourself if you have the right tools.

After installing the new glass, apply some caulking around the edge. This will make the glass weatherproof. Install a glazier’s point on both sides of the frame. This will secure the pane. The points shouldn't be tight enough to cause friction between the frame and the sash however they should not be loose.

Before applying the putty to the surface, knead thoroughly until it is soft and free from lumps. Then you can roll it into pencil-sized strips. The first strip should be placed to the corner of the frame, moving from one corner to another to ensure it is smooth and even.

Glazier's Points

The glazier’s points are small triangular pieces of steel that allow glass to be secured to the frame without causing damage to the delicate surface. It's easy to learn how to use this hidden tool, and you'll be able to save money on the expense of an expert installation.

After the old putty and the glazier's point are gone, thoroughly clean the frame using a utility knife to remove any remaining traces.
