WoW Upgrades - The item upgrading Upgrader

Upgrades will give you a boost in certain statistics. Each upgrade increases the level of an item by +3. Each upgrade also increases an unspecified substat.

The upgraded gear is usually more valuable, unless it is not required by nature (like FB sorc shields) or a high stat variance (like Eth Titan weapons). Upgrades aren't as valuable for those with lower requirements because of the requirement to roll a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader allows players to upgrade their gear to a higher item level by providing the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any kind of weapon or armor. The item used to upgrade the item will be consumed and can't be used again. Upgrades can be applied to enchantments.

You can upgrade your equipment anytime by visiting the upgrader in any major city. To keep your gear current it is recommended that you visit the upgrader every couple of weeks.

The cost of upgrading will depend on the current item level of the equipment being upgraded, but will always be less expensive than purchasing new equipment from other sources. For instance upgrading a Benthic chest to 385 levels will cost 20 recycle points while buying a similar item from another player will costs 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that are used to improve the quality of weapons tools, armor, and other items. They are purchased by players through NPCs that sell upgrades to items in exchange for a variety of currencies, and can also be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade is able to be used on any weapon, tool, or armor. The button will show the preview of an item's next upgrade level, when there are enough materials.

The cost of upgrading is based on the slot of the item upgrader mod and the current level of the item and the weapon's price is higher than gloves or bracers, for instance. Each step costs 15 Flightstones plus a certain number of crests. Some upgrades give a discount on the Flightstones. Once an item has been upgraded to a certain degree, it can be downgraded and sold to the upgrader at a lower cost.

Many locations have upgraders for their items in addition to the main island and some outposts. The NPCs provide both an upgrade coupon and the possibility of obtaining the latest recipe. The discount on upgrades increases with the number of items that are being upgraded, and can be increased by having players complete some specific achievements or complete quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an upgrader for items at the start unlike Cromwell from Baldur's gate II. Instead the NPCs that are available to facilitate upgrades are acquired via various methods which is both an improvement but also a drawback.

In Season 3, the upgrade system was tweaked a bit, with numerous new features added. When a player has an upgrade to a specific level of an item for a specific armor slot, upgrading further items to that level will cost less even in the event that they belong to another set of gear.

Crests

The new currency system isn't difficult to use, but it brings some changes to the process of upgrading. For instance, once an item reaches the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic) it won't need Flightstones to be upgraded. This change is designed to allow players to upgrade their equipment up to the highest ilvl possible for all their characters rather than relying solely on seasonal loot.

Another significant modification is that crests have one purpose and it's crucial to use them wisely. For instance, it's a good idea make use of all your Whelpling-rank crests on the Best item upgrader equipment available and save Drake and Wyrm crests to use for the next set of upgrades you plan to make. This is especially true for items such as rings and trinkets that occupy multiple slots. The account-wide discount will only be applicable if all the slots on the character are filled with top-quality gear.
