Path of Exile Item Upgrading

In Path of Exile, item upgrading is among the best ways to upgrade your gear without relying upon large-ticket drops or trade. This article will show you how to upgrade your gear.

Upgrading equipment grants an increase to the item's base stats. The bonus increases with upgrade component level and rarity.

Components

Upgrade components are the things that can make your weapons and armor better. You can get them from destroying enemies, finding them in spheres of items or purchasing them from karma sellers. You can also salvage them from equipment that contains the components or through high-end salvage kits like Black Lion Salvage Kit and Ascended Salvage Tool. Upgrade components aren't destroyed when you remove them from an item.

The primary function of upgrade components is to enable an item to be upgraded, but they also serve other purposes. They can be used to increase the level or experience gained by upgrading existing weapons or gear. They can be forged to give additional benefits. A glyph that is crafted can boost the upgrade chances of its target, and an upgrade boosts the attack or defense capabilities of the weapon.

Selecting an upgrade template from the GUI will allow you to connect it to an item upgrades. This will show the upgrade components to which the item can be updated. You can also use the workbench when selecting an upgrade template. In either scenario the item will be upgraded after enough upgrade components are collected.

Each component has a unique experience multiplier. This determines the amount of experience an item can gain when upgraded using that component. Organic components, for example, have an increased multiplier of experience than mechanical components. It is therefore recommended to upgrade with organic components until you have reached the experience multiplier for the next rank of the weapon or gear, and then switch to mechanical upgrades.

Each item has a maximum upgrade number that is available for. The number of items that can be upgraded is determined by their upgradeable rank, and the kind of upgrade they can receive. For example, the highest possible weapon upgrade is a tier 10 weapon. However, the most popular upgrade for weapons is an tier 6 weapon as well as an armor upgrade of tier 5.

Sets
