However, they'll have to improve their scoring from the perimeter to maintain their top-of-the-line performance.

The slot is the best option for wide receivers who are fast, as they can open up more easily when their route won't be covered by a cornerback or linebacker. Corey Coleman is the only wide receiver who isn't a fast wideout, but could benefit from more slot time. He's a solid target for short and intermediate routes.

The last spot on the list features more possession-based receivers who perform better on intermediate and short routes than those in deep areas such as Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler. Jeudy is expected to be the Rams main slot receiver this season, is a sleeper pick. Courtland Cooper and Amari Sutton are expected to play a greater role in downfield targets. Hamler, meanwhile, should be a natural on short-to-mid-long and intermediate routes, because this is where he was at his best when playing for the Bills in 2021. Hamler could be a great replacement for the departing wideout Jordan Matthews.

Percentage of Snaps in the Slot

The percentage of snaps that a receiver makes in the slot can be a good indicator for their ability to run routes that are deep. It's not always a reliable indicator of a receiver’s skill set since some receivers are better in the slot but don't play further.

Alshon Jeffrey, as an example is the league leader in the number of targets he receives per game (4.8) However, he's only ranked 6th when it comes to slot receiving scores (58.5). This is due to the fact that most of his targets are from outside and it's difficult to make a first down on a wide-open, deep route.

On contrary, some receivers excel at playing inside and can't do much on the outer. For instance the Panthers handed Robby Anderson 978 snaps during the season, and he completed an astounding 74% of his slot routes, compared to just 26% on boundary routes. This is an enormous difference that shows how much more productive Robby Anderson is when he's aligned with the slot.

Chris Godwin, a Buccaneers player, plays inside the majority of his passes and has one of the top five slot receiving scores (58.5). He also played 51% of his perimeter routes and is an expert in one-on-one coverage.

Speed receivers are more effective when lined up inside, because they can get targeted way down the field and often are in one-on-one coverage. There are names like Mike Evans, Amari Cooper and Julio Jones in our top five.

McDuffie, Moore and other slot cornerbacks are also part of this group. Both have been able to create pressures in the passing game, with McDuffie leading the NFL with seven forced fumbles and Moore having the highest tackle stop rate on this list (-3.5). Through using McDuffie in the slot when they are running nickel or dime packages, and then placing him on the outside in base defense, Spagnuolo has maximized his capabilities. Moore's ability in stopping big run plays is a huge advantage when playing the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While top NFL receivers like Golden Tate, Larry Fitzgerald, and Baldwin excel on the perimeter but their slot counterparts are just as good. Wide receivers with high slot grades score touchdowns in the same way as those on the perimeter. This is mostly because quarterbacks have a more stable target distribution when throwing to outside and slot receivers compared to other inside options like tight ends and backfield pass-catchers.

It's interesting to see a player such as CeeDee lamb on this list for 2022. He plays the slot in three WR sets and flanker in two of the sets. In actuality Lamb is running a greater number of slot routes than most players listed on this chart. This is an excellent way to gain matchup advantages for your team. It also helps to explain why Lamb is the most highly-rated receiver in our system.

Lamb also plays at the X-position and makes huge plays outside. Lamb isn't as powerful as some of the other players in this ranking however he's still an elite wide receiver who is a good fit in the Cowboys scheme.

Mecole Hardman, another player who puts huge numbers on targets of both kinds, is a different example. He is one of the top players in the league when it comes to taking throws from behind his shoulders. He's also a great catcher who is contested.

Another player on this list who's a true slot specialist is Baltimore's Jalen Hilton, who has lined up in the slot on 85.7 percent of his defensive snaps this season. He's allowed the third-lowest target EPA and the fifth-best run stop EPA for cornerbacks that are aligned in the slot, making him a valuable part of his team's defense. On the other hand, he's struggled to stop passes from the outside and has given a negative EPA against these kinds of targets. This is because he's playing with linebackers and safety players who aren't able to match Hilton's speed, size and route-running abilities.
